We have now traversed across Normandy to be near Rouen. En route to our final campground we stopped off at the D-Day beaches near Arromanches (where an artificial harbour was created to land the heavy equipment – the remnants of which can still be seen in the photo above). Amazing to think that so many of the villages that we pass through in this area (and remark how lovely they are) were just piles of rubble 65 years ago.
Our campground is off the beaten track in the heart of rural Normandy, surrounded by lovely medieval villages (many of the buildings being in what we would call Tudor style).
Today we travelled to Giverny to see Monet’s house and garden. Caitlin studied Monet at school so it was a bit of a pilgrimage. The garden, which inspired so many of Monet’s famous works (such as the lily series), is very beautiful (as indeed is the whole of Giverny). The gloss was however taken off somewhat by Amy throwing up in the car (just a few km’s short of our destination). To her credit, she got most of it on the car seat and floor rather than on herself, but it wasn’t very pleasant (especially with temperatures in the low 30's...so the smell seemed to intensify as the day wore on). Initially we thought it was just car sickness, but a later vomiting episode (in Monet’s Garden no less!) suggests that it might be a bug. Hopefully she’ll keep that one to herself! Time will tell.
